My Learning Journey
I wanted to understand what separates working code from good code. So I used VibeCodeArena.ai to pick a problem statement where different LLMs produce code for the same prompt. Upon landing on the main page of VibeCodeArena, I could see different challenges. Since I was interested in an Image carousal application, I picked the challenge with the prompt "Make a simple image carousel that lets users click 'next' and 'previous' buttons to cycle through images."
Within seconds, I had code from multiple LLMs, including DeepSeek, Mistral, GPT, and Llama. Each code sample also had an objective evaluation score. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many solutions for the same problem. I picked gpt-oss-20b model from OpenAI. For this experiment, I wanted to focus on learning how to code better so either one of the LLMs could have worked. But VibeCodeArena can also be used to evaluate different LLMs to help make a decision about which model to use for what problem statement.
The model had produced a clean HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The code looked professional. I could see the preview of the code by clicking on the render icon. It worked perfectly in my browser. The carousel was smooth, and the images loaded beautifully.
But was it actually good code?
I had no idea. That's when I decided to look at the evaluation metrics
What I Thought Was "Good Code"

For my experiment, I decided to work on two suggestions provided by VibeCodeArena by preloading critical CSS/JS resources with <link rel="preload"> for faster rendering in index.html and by adding explicit width and height attributes to images to prevent layout shift in index.html. The code editor gave me change summary before I submitted by code for evaluation.

After making improvements, I submit my code for evaluation. Now I see:

My changes helped improve the performance metric of this simple code from 82% to 83% - Yay! But this was just one small change. I now believe that by acting upon multiple suggestions, I can easily improve the quality of the code that I write versus just relying on prompts.
Each improvement can move me up the leaderboard. I'm not just learning in isolation—I'm seeing how my solutions compare to other developers and AI models.
So, this is the loop: Generate → Analyze → Challenge → Improve → Measure → Repeat.
Every iteration makes me better at both evaluating AI code and writing better prompts.

The telecom service provider just sent out a notification that one can use their services only to call friends and family in Delhi and not in other parts of the country. How does that sound? Partial? Well, don’t worry it isn’t true. Why should the service provider decide who should I call from my phone? This post will try to demystify the Net Neutrality myth.
The internet works on a similar principle and the principle advocates for an open internet. One must be able to communicate freely across the internet. This principle is referred to as net neutrality. For the net to be neutral, ISPs and the government must treat all data on internet equal and not charge differential based on user, content, website, app etc.
There has been much hue and cry about net neutrality off late and the debate seemed to be growing exponentially over the past few months. With the biggest names in the media industry expressing their views on net neutrality, it has been the most discussed topic all over the internet. The debate started gaining attention with Airtel coming up with a zero plan that stated that the provider will charge for VOIP calls made through apps like Whatsapp and Skype, it also made certain apps free for the users. While they argued that Airtel zero is a marketing platform where the data charges will be paid by the companies whose apps are free, the others condemned it as against net neutrality. This led to Flipkart pulling itself out of the scheme.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had initially come up with a consultation paper that aimed at setting up a regulatory framework for over the top (OTT) services in India like Whatsapp and Skype but was criticized on grounds that it is already regulated by the IT Act.
Finally, after a lot of debates TRAI has come up with a decision that is in favor of net neutrality.
On Monday, February 8th, 2016, they barred the service providers from charging differential prices for data services and hence phased out Airtel Zero and Facebook’s Free Basics in their current form.
The decision encompasses the following points:
No service provider can offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services on the basis of content.
No service provider shall enter into any arrangement, agreement or contract, by whatever name called, with any person, natural or legal, that results in discriminatory tariffs for data services being offered or charged by the service provider for the purpose of evading the prohibition in this regulation.
Reduced tariff for accessing or providing emergency services, or at times of public emergency has been permitted.
Financial disincentives for contravention of the regulation have also been specified.
TRAI may review these regulations after a period of two years.
This decision that favors net neutrality will also favor the users who are free to access any content on the web, after all, it is the worldwide web and access to all websites must be easy and hassle-free. It will also favor startups and new business owners by giving them the opportunity to showcase their products and services without being discriminated against the big giants that can easily pay money to be free to the users. Net neutrality hence supports a competitive marketplace. It also promotes freedom of speech.
A word with a Facebook spokesperson reveals that they are disappointed about TRAI’s decision but will make further efforts to promote their idea of 'Free Basics' for the unconnected. Telecom providers may also come up against the decision but for now, the battle is won and our Internet is free. This success can be attributed to our efforts to understand net neutrality and raising a voice against the abuse of our privileges by the influential giants. The victory of net neutrality is our victory.
Let’s celebrate this victory by sharing our joy by letting everyone know that the internet is infinite and we are free to use it according to our wish. And what better way to start than participating in some of the exciting challenges that we are conducting.
Whenever we roll out an improvement on our platform at HackerEarth, we love to conduct A/B tests on the enhancement to understand which iteration helps our users more in using the platform in a better way. As the available third-party libraries did not quite meet our needs, we wrote our own A/B testing framework in Django. In this post, we will share a few insights into how we accomplished this.
The basics
A lot of products, especially on the web, use a method called A/B testing or split testing to quantify how well a new page or layout performs compared to the old one. The crux of the method is to show layout "A" to a certain set or bucket of users and layout "B" to another set of users. The next step is to track user actions leading to certain milestones, which would provide critical data about the "effectiveness" of both the pages or layouts.
Before we began writing code for the framework, we made a list of all the things we wanted the framework to do:
Route users to multiple views (with different templates)
Route users to a single view (with different templates)
Make the views/templates stick for users
A/B test visitors who do not have an account on HackerEarth (anonymous users)
Sticky views/templates for anonymous users as well
Support for A/A/B or A/B/C/D…./n/ testing

Getting the logic right
To begin with, we had to categorize our users into buckets. So all our users were assigned a bucket number ranging from 1 to 120. This numbering is not strict and the range can be arbitrary or per your needs. Next, we defined two constants—the first one specifies which view a user is routed to, and the second one specifies the fallback or primary view.
Next, we wrote two decorators which we could wrap around views—one for handling views and the other for handling templates. In the first scenario, the decorator would take a dictionary of views, a primary view, and a Boolean value which specifies if anonymous users should be A/B tested as well.

Let’s assume that we have already written the A and B views. Let’s call them view_a and view_b. To get the entire thing working, we will write a new view called view_ab and wrap it with the decorator.
For the sake of convenience, we require this new view to return a dictionary.
Finally, we need to integrate analytics to collect data. We used Mixpanel at the JavaScript end to track user behavior. You can use any analytics or event tracking tool for this purpose.
This is just one of the ways you can do A/B testing using Django. You can always take this basic framework and improve it or add new features.
P.S. If you want to experiment with an A/A/B or A/B/C testing, all you need to do is change the AB_TEST constant.

This image is very disconnected from reality. Almost 90% of all short term trade, and about 50-70% of all trade, is done by stock trading algorithms. These are machine learning algorithms that buy and sell in the stock market, at a phenomenally fast pace.
There are many kinds of stock trading algorithms - from those which will execute simple buy and trade functions (at phenomenally high speeds, mind you), all the way to analysing the news to forecast which stocks to buy and sell. In fact, there are some algorithms that exploit the behavior of an opponent's algorithms for a profit. Mike Beller, the CTO of
Tradeworx explained a classic example of what an exploitative algorithm can do.
In 2012, an algorithm started to rapidly buy the stocks of food company, Kraft foods. This artificially increased the value of each of these stocks. It is said that the algorithm spent about 200,000 USD in buying the stocks and then sold it for a whopping 900,000 USD. That’s over half a million dollars in profit.
Of course, this was corrected and all trades pertaining to this was cancelled and dubbed as a technical error. However these algorithms are phenomenally powerful, and to a large extent, humans are at its mercy. How, you ask? Read on -
The real need for speed..
It is said that a simple buy and sell algorithm can execute up to 1000 trades a second. Compare this to 11-12 seconds that a human takes to execute a single trade. So, how did we get here?
It is imperative, that the first one with information, is usually going to win. It’s the same logic behind kings using pigeons to send information, so as to beat the enemy king’s man on horseback. This same is more pertinent in stock trading.
The simple mantra of getting rich in the stock market, whether it's through traditional investments or
pocket options trading is buying low and selling high. So the first to get information about a rising stock has the advantage of making more money than someone who gets the information at a later time. This simple need, set off a mini arm’s race in the stock trading market.
.. Is when the speed of light isn’t fast enough
As electric pulses, the speed of the data is restricted by the speed of the electron, which is about 2,200 km/second. With fiber optic cables, the speed of data transmission is restricted only by the speed of light, which is about 300,000 km/second. These are mind boggling numbers, but in the world of algorithmic stock trading, even microseconds in delay is a missed opportunity.
Let me explain - someone sitting in New Jersey will receive information faster from New York, than someone sitting in California. The distance needed to cover is lesser, so you’ll get your information much faster. Of course, this is the speed of light that we’re talking about, so the difference is really in microseconds.
But that’s more than enough for an algorithm to execute a trade. It is estimated that an algorithm can execute a trade in about 10 microseconds. This became an issue in the USA, as traders began buying real estate closer to the NYSE and NASDAQ so as to counter this problem.
The solution that NYSE came up with, is to provide server rooms for companies, where a company’s server will be placed in a room right next to the NYSE server rooms, and the cable length from the NYSE servers to a company’s server will be exactly the same, for everyone who buys space in NYSE.
A fair solution - only it didn’t stop the arms race.
We’re more connected than ever
Back in the day, the US had 2 stock markets, namely NYSE and NASDAQ. As of 2 years ago, the US has 13 regulated exchanges and over 50 dark pools. And not all of them provide the on premises solution that NYSE provided. But that’s not even the problem.
There are different kinds of stock markets. There are markets that sell company equity and there are those which sell commodities, like gold, copper, wool, oil etc. And these markets are connected.
Take the case of oil - if the value of oil goes up in the commodity market, a petroleum company’s stock also increases. And these markets are not even in the same place. So, we’re back to the same need for speed.
In the US, there is a commodity market in Texas and the NYSE and NASDAQ is in New York. Massive amounts of money has been spent in creating a straight communication line between the two markets - blowing up mountains on the way to lay wires is just one of the many outrageous things that were done for this. All of this effort has achieved a maximum efficiency of 13 microseconds for an up and down communication. This is still slow, as a computer still has to wait an enormously long 3 microseconds before it can execute a buy/sell function.
When will this end?
Not anytime soon. It’s been found that the speed of light is faster in air, as opposed to a fiber optic cable, which has further reduced the time to 8 microseconds for communication between Texas and New York. Who knows what we’ll find tomorrow?
And given that things are happening at such breakneck speeds, it’s very tough to analyse and find the reason behind many stock market crashes. Listen to the last
10 minutes of this Podcast for one fascinating event. A circuit breaker tripped and the NYSE lost power for 5 seconds. The market plummeted almost a 1000 points. Funnily enough, it came straight back up as soon as the power came back. Worryingly, no one really knows what caused it, even to this day.

The execution of the task also becomes cheaper - 10 years ago, it costed 100 USD to trade 1000 shares. Today, 10 USD for the same.
