Hackathon, Misconstrued.

"The Secret lives of Hackathon junkies"

The above link was intentionally put there. This article has been shared by many prominent hackathon goers. Being in the business of hackathons, I had to know what this was about.

The article is the experience of a journalist who was a part of a week long hackathon. She brings out some unspoken truths about the hackathon culture. They are -

  • Nothing useful is ever created at a hackathon - Given the lack of time, direction and objective Hackathon fuels creation of Vaporware. Vaporware are short-lived hacks or software. Vaporware tend to evaporate post the hackathon, as nobody works on it.
  • Entrepreneur doesn’t mean rich - The author talks about ideapreneurs, who’re passionate about starting up and probably know the valuation of the latest funded companies. However, this doesn’t mean that they’re well to do. In fact, many startup aspirants are broke all the time, they spend too much time at Hackathons, trying to build a billion dollar company.
  • Hackers still need to keep their day jobs - It’s almost a follow up to the previous point, which is that building a company from a hackathon is next to impossible. She says so, quite eloquently, -
    The final secret of hacker culture is that Google is a black swan, a lightning strike, an outlier, a Goliath. Most hackers need to keep their day jobs.”

All these points are correct and very, very true. However, through the course of reading this article, one question that rose in my mind was- Since when was a hackathon about building startups?

The first hackathons were just a bunch of programmers trying to solve a problem. They hacked to build products for fun. They hacked a new language because they could learn something new.

One of the core concepts of a hackathon is creation over ideas. A developer’s time at a hackathon should not be judged on the prize that they won or the investor they met. It should be based on what you did there, what you learnt and what you created. Why do hacks need to be judged on its monetisation model?

Any regular hackathon goer, even the one who says that nothing useful is ever created at a hackathon, will also tell you that the amount of learning that they go through, at every hackathon, is much more than what they could ever do by themselves over a weekend.

A startup isn’t something that should be created at a hackathon. Businesses need to address a core problem and be able to solve it at scale. This needs great research. The idea needs validation. Other aspects need to be thought out too - operations, marketing, sales, team, etc, etc. Why would you want to rush this process and try to get it done over a weekend? It is my strong opinion, that startups need to be thought out and validated and a hackathon environment isn’t the best place to do so.

Hackathons have and should always be about building products. Let developers build fun things, without having to worry about its viability as a business. Let hackers allow their imagination to go wild. There is even a remote possibility that this idea could become a billion dollar company, but that’s not why it should be done.

HackerEarth, the company I work for, is in the business of hackathons. HackerEarth conducts at least one large scale online hackathon (about 3000 - 5000 developers participate in each one) a month. We are one of the custodians of this form of event. On these credentials, here are a few general rules of thumb to follow-
  • A hackathon should always be about building something - It isn’t a hackathon if the “hack” isn’t given the highest priority
  • A hackathon should be for programmers and developers - If it is for anyone else, make a distinction - marketing hackathon, startup weekend etc.
  • Sponsors and businesses must not obstruct a hackathons core values - Figure out ways like AWS where sponsor branding and product adoption benefits the developer.
  • Have good mentors and judges - Remember, most people will remember your hackathon for how much they learnt during their time there.
  • Judge based on what was built and not what a hack could be - Hackathons should always showcase the builders. This should follow through in the judging too.
Prizes, wifi, food and all the other things are hygiene factors. You could outdo yourself in all of these aspects, and if your hackathon doesn’t adhere to the core philosophy of building, it will be for nothing. You will leave your developer audience disgruntled, and they most probably won’t come back to your hackathon.

And lets face it; a hackathon without developers, is just another b-plan competition.

And the winners of the Honeywell application hackathon are...

Honeywell's mobility hackathon has just concluded on HackerEarth, and we have three winners. Congrats to all winners! Top performers in the hackathon have already been offered with positions at Honeywell. This was a 2-stage Hackathon - the first stage was an online hackathon, which saw over 2500 people participate, and the second stage was an online/offline hackathon that saw people in Bangalore hack at the Honeywell office.

The hackathon attracted a lot of participation from all over India, and it was particularly special because many experienced professionals built applications and participated in the spirit of hackathons. Interesting submissions were made, and only 30 made it to the next round. From the second phase, there were three winners.

Aadhaar Hackathon resources

This is already one of the biggest hackathons that we've ever conducted. But with big things, there will be some glitches. There were a lot of queries raised about the usage of the Aadhaar APIs. Top 7 algorithms and data structures every programmer should know about

Coming from the background of Competitive Programming and Software Development, I have compiled a list of algorithms and data structures that every programmer should know about. We will see what they do and where they are used with simple examples. This list is prepared to keep in mind their use in competitive programming and current development practices.

Here are the Top 7 algorithms and data structures to know:

  1. Sort Algorithms
  2. Sorting is the most heavily studied concept in Computer Science. Idea is to arrange the items of a list in a specific order. Though every major programming language has built-in sorting libraries, it comes in handy if you know how they work. Depending on the requirement, you may want to use any of these.

    More importantly, you should know when and where to use them.

    • Sorting by price, popularity, etc. in e-commerce websites
    • Sorting by score in HackerEarth contest leaderboard

  3. Search Algorithms
  4. Binary Search is used to perform a very efficient search on sorted datasets. The time complexity is O(log N). The idea is to repeatedly divide in half the portion of the list that could contain the item until we narrow it down to one possible item.

    • Searching for a song in a sorted list
    • Git debugging via git bisect

    Depth/Breadth First Search are also commonly used in tree/graph data structures.

    • Used by search engines for web-crawling
    • Used in AI to build bots
    • Finding shortest paths on maps

  5. Hashing
  6. Hashing is the most widely used technique to find appropriate data by key or ID. The data structure is referred to as a Hash-Map or Hash-Table or Dictionary.

    • Routers use IP address → Path mapping
    • Checking for duplicates efficiently

  7. Dynamic Programming
  8. Dynamic Programming (DP) solves problems by breaking them into simpler subproblems and storing their results to save time.

    This analogy explains DP like a 4-year-old could understand it.

    • Used in many DP algorithms
    • Real-world example: Duckworth-Lewis method in cricket

  9. Exponentiation by Squaring
  10. Instead of looping N times, Exponentiation by Squaring calculates powers in O(log N). This method is commonly known as Binary Exponentiation.

    • Used in RSA encryption

  11. String Matching and Parsing
  12. Pattern matching and validation are widely used tasks. For example:

    • KMP Algorithm is used for matching substrings
    • Regular expressions for validation and parsing input

  13. Primality Testing Algorithms
  14. To test whether a number is prime, we use:

    • Sieve of Eratosthenes – for finding primes in a range
    • Trial Division up to sqrt(n) – when memory is limited
    • Fermat and Miller-Rabin Tests – probabilistic checks

    Applications:

    • Used in encryption (e.g., RSA)
    • Hashing algorithms

"I found my boyfriend at a Hackathon"

On a lazy Bangalore afternoon, I was scrolling down my Facebook news feed, when I saw this post by Kasey Robinson.

I had never heard of such a thing. Forget finding love in the club, finding love at a Hackathon is unheard of! I had to know more about this story, so I reached out to Kasey, who was more than happy to share. A few days later, I got on a Google hangout with Kasey Robinson and Mark Wang and got to know their story. I found it very inspiring.

Not only are they adoring lovers, they are also co-founders of a startup.



Like Music and Lyrics - Design and Code

It was interesting that the two of them don’t come from computer science backgrounds. Mark is a Math PhD dropout and Kasey is an arts major. Mark didn’t like his PhD course and he dropped out, deciding to go to tech and started going to a lot of hackathons.

Kasey lived in Oakland, California, and was apprehensive about moving to San Francisco as most people there were in tech. She had, however, learned some code in her childhood and could design. Equipped with these skills, Kasey went across the famous bridge, into the epicenter of tech and startups.

Work on ideas after the Hackathon! Possibilities are endless

Kasey first met Mark at a Hackathon. She said, “I saw him first pitch the idea and I knew he was going to win it, which he did. And I thought he was really cute. After the Hackathon, we worked on the project for about three months.”

This is one of those rare instances where a team that met at a hackathon chooses to work on the hack after the event. Kasey said, “I used to think it was a common thing, but apparently it isn’t. We were one of the exceptions in that regard.”

Mark shared that the two of them worked as co-founders for three months, before starting to get attracted to each other. He said, “As co-founders of a startup, you’re spending a lot of time together. In the early days, it was almost 8-9 hours a day, and I really started to get to know her. It was really interesting, because Kasey and I met at a time when we both wanted a career and a life change.”

Separating work and personal lives

When a couple runs a startup, the dynamics of being a couple sometimes affects the dynamics of being co-founders. And it is hard to distinguish. Mark is very frank about the difficulty. He says, “It is hard to keep the two separate as the emotional part of the relationship keeps coming into play. The key is to be very understanding.”

Kasey mirrors mark’s thought. She says, “When you’re working on a startup, you’ve got to be as lean and efficient as possible. And there will be times where you’re going to have to put a tough point across and that might play into the power dynamics of the relationship too. I think at the end of the day, you’ve just got to be mature.”

Both Kasey and Mark believe that being co-founders has truly made things a lot faster for them. Kasey says, “We’ve been dating for about the last 9 months and through all this time, we’re spending almost 20 hours a day with each other. We’re really gotten to know each other and in a sense, this startup journey has been a good test for our relationship.”

Mark adds, “There are a few successful startup couples out there - like Kevin and Julia Hartz, the co-founders of Eventbrite, whom we got to interact with in a previous startup venture. You quickly get to know each other's likes and dislikes and when you’re spending so much time with each other, you’ve really got to like the other person to make it work.”

“Just include a lot of humor and sarcasm and it should be just fine,” quipped Kasey.

Building something useful over something impressive

It almost seems like the duo’s startup journey has matured along with their relationship. Throughout the interview, I got a vibe that the two of them were a couple who were at peace with being each other, around each other, and that could have come without hard work.

Similarly, Mark shared how their startup journey has also matured. He says, “From wanting to build something to impress, our current focus is to build something that is useful.” The two are building an app via which you can show your appreciation to your friends. Mark says, “I can thank my girlfriend via the app and it really gives me a gratifying feeling and post launch I hope my other friends feel the same too.”

There’s no saying what a startup idea could become, but Kasey and Mark’s story is definitely one for the ages.

6 industry experts predict the 2023 recruiting trends

Rado: Prioritization, team time, and environment management.

I think "prioritization" and "team time" management are obvious. But what do I mean by "environment management"?

A productive environment is one of the key ingredients for a productive team. Look at where your team wastes most time, which can be automated. For example, end-to-end writing tests take time because our tools are cumbersome and undocumented. So let's improve this.

Mike: Setting better metrics/KPIs, moving away from LinkedIn, and sharing more knowledge.

  1. Metrics/KPIs: Become better at setting measurable KPIs and accountable metrics. They are not the same thing—it's like the Square and Rectangle. One fits into the other but they're not the same. Hold people accountable to metrics, not KPIs. Make sure your metrics are aligned with company goals and values, and that they push employees toward excellence, not mediocrity.
  2. Freedom from LinkedIn: This is every year, and will probably continue to be. LinkedIn is a great database, but it is NOT the only way to find candidates, and oftentimes, not even the most effective/efficient. Explore other tools and methodologies!
  3. Join the conversation: I'd love to see new names of people presenting at conferences and webinars. And also, see new authors on the popular TA content websites. Everyone has things they can share—be a part of the community, not just a user of. Join FB groups, write and post articles, and comment on other people's posts with more than 'Great article'. It's a great community, but it's only great because of the people who contribute to it—be one of those people.

Pamela: Resilience, leveraging data, and self-awareness.

  1. Resilience: A “must-have” skill for the 21st century due to constant changes in the tech industry. Face and adapt to challenges. Overcome them and handle disappointments. Never give up. This will keep HR people alive in 2023.
  2. Data skills: Get some data analyst skills. The capacity to transfer numbers into data can help you be a better HR professional, prepared to improve the employee experience and show your leadership team how HR is leveraging data to drive business results.
  3. Self-awareness: Allows you to react better to upsetting situations and workplace challenges. It is a healthy skill to cultivate – especially as an HR professional.

Brian: Agility, resourcefulness, and empathy.

  1. Agility: Allows professionals to move with market conditions. Always be as prepared as possible for any situation to come. Be flexible based on what does or does not happen.
  2. Resourcefulness: Allows professionals to do more with less. It also helps them focus on how to amplify, lift, and empower the current teams to be the best they can be.
  3. Empathy: Allows professionals to take a more proactive approach to listening and understanding where all workers are coming from. Amid stressful situations, companies need empathetic team members and leaders alike who can meet each other wherever they are and be a support.

Steve: Negotiation, data management, and talent development.

  1. Negotiation: Wage transparency laws will fundamentally change the compensation conversation. We must ensure we are still discussing compensation early in the process. And not just “assume” everyone’s on the same page because “the range is published”.
  2. Data management and predictive analytics: Looking at your organization's talent needs as a casserole of indistinguishable components and demands will not be good enough. We must upgrade the accuracy and consistency of our data and the predictions we can make from it.

  1. Talent development: We’ve been exploring the interplay between TA and TM for years. Now is the time to integrate your internal and external talent marketplaces. To provide career experiences to people within your organization and not just those joining your organization.

Patricia: Technology, research, and relationship building.

  1. Technology: Get better at understanding the technology that’s out there. To help you speed up the process, track candidate experience, but also eliminate bias. Metrics are becoming big in HR.
  2. Research: Honestly, read more books. Many great thought leaders put out content about the “future of work”, understanding “Gen Z”, or “quiet quitting.” Dedicate work hours to understanding your ever-changing field.
  3. Relationship Building: Especially in your immediate communities. Most people don’t know who you are or what exactly it is that you do. Build your personal brand and what you are doing at your company to impact those closest to you. Create a referral funnel to get a pipeline going. When people want a job you and your company ought to be top of mind. Also, tell the stories of the people that work there.

7 Tech Recruiting Trends To Watch Out For In 2024

The last couple of years transformed how the world works and the tech industry is no exception. Remote work, a candidate-driven market, and automation are some of the tech recruiting trends born out of the pandemic.

While developers are some of the most coveted talent out there, they also have the most myths being circulated. Most of us forget that developers too are just like us. And no, they do not code all day long.

We wanted to bust a lot of these myths and shed light on how the programming world looks through a developer’s lens in 2021—especially in the wake of a global pandemic. This year’s edition of the annual HackerEarth Developer Survey is packed with developers’ wants and needs when choosing jobs, major gripes with the WFH scenario, and the latest market trends to watch out for, among others.

“Good coders work around the clock.” No, they don’t.

Busting the myth that developers spend the better part of their day coding, 52% of student developers said that they prefer to code for a maximum of 3 hours per day.

When not coding, devs swear by their walks as a way to unwind. When we asked devs the same question last year, they said they liked to indulge in indoor games like foosball. In 2021, going for walks has become the most popular method of de-stressing. We’re chalking it up to working from home and not having a chance to stretch their legs.

Staying ahead of the skills game

Following the same trend as last year, students (39%) and working professionals (44%) voted for Go as one of the most popular programming languages that they want to learn. The other programming languages that devs are interested in learning are Rust, Kotlin, and Erlang.

Programming languages that students are most skilled at are HTML/CSS, C++, and Python. Senior developers are more comfortable working with HTML/CSS, SQL, and Java.

How happy are developers

Employees from middle market organizations had the highest 'happiness index' of 7.2. Experienced developers who work at enterprises are marginally less happy in comparison to people who work at smaller companies.

However, happiness is not a binding factor for where developers work. Despite scoring the least on the happiness scale, working professionals would still like to work at enterprise companies and growth-stage startups.

What works when looking for work

Student devs (63%), who are just starting in the tech world, said a good career growth curve is a must-have. Working professionals can be wooed by offers of a good career path (69%) and compensation (68%).

One trend that has changed since last year is that at least 50% of students and working professionals alike care a lot more about ESOPs and positive Glassdoor reviews now than they did in 2020.

Tips straight from the horse’s mouth

Steve highlighted how the information collated from the developer survey affects the recruiting community and how they can leverage this data to hire better and faster.

  • The insight where developer happiness is correlated to work hours didn’t find a significant difference between the cohorts. Devs working for less than 40 hours seemed marginally happier than those that clocked in more than 60 hours a week.
“This is an interesting data point, which shows that devs are passionate about what they do. You can increase their workload by 50% and still not affect their happiness. From a work perspective, as a recruiter, you have to get your hiring manager to understand that while devs never say no to more work, HMs shouldn’t overload the devs. Devs are difficult to source and burnout only leads to killing your talent pool, which is something that you do not want,” says Steve.
  • Roughly 45% of both student and professional developers learned how to code in college was another insight that was open to interpretation.
“Let’s look at it differently. Less than half of the surveyed developers learned how to code in college. There’s a major segment of the market today that is not necessarily following the ‘college degree to getting a job’ path. Developers are beginning to look at their skillsets differently and using various platforms to upskill themselves. Development is not about pedigree, it’s more about the potential to demonstrate skills. This is an interesting shift in the way we approach testing and evaluating devs in 2021.”

  • Node.js and AngularJS are the most popular frameworks among students and professionals.
“I was surprised by how many young students wanted to learn AngularJS, given that it’s more of an enterprise framework. Another thing that stood out to me was that the younger generation wants to learn technologies that are not necessarily cool like ExtJS (35%). This is good because people are picking technologies that they enjoy working with instead of just going along with what everyone else is doing. This also builds a more diverse technology pool.” — Rado
  • 22% of devs say ‘Zoom Fatigue’ is real and directly affects productivity.
“Especially for younger people who still haven’t figured out a routine to develop their skills, there is something I’d like you to try out. Start using noise-canceling headphones. They help keep distractions to a minimum. I find clutter-free working spaces to be an interesting concept as well.”
