13 rare and underrated programming skills

There are so many programming languages to learn; hundreds of front-end and back-end languages, their frameworks, building applications using them, and so on.

If you are majoring in computer science, you will have picked up C or C++, but if you program for a living, it is more likely that Java, Python, Perl, and Ruby are the ones on your hot-list.

But what about those programming languages that are rare yet quite singular, those that aren’t very popular yet worth checking out?

They may be non-mainstream, and they may be esoteric languages you have probably never heard of, but come on, if you are a programming zealot, you know that your head can hold more than two languages!

Here’s a small list to interest a hobbyist or hacker.

  1. Rust

    Sponsored by Mozilla Research, Rust focuses on “type safety, memory safety, concurrency, and performance." You can use Rust for distributed client/server applications and reliable system-level programming.

    Perhaps its newness is why fewer people are queuing up to learn it. Going by this post, it doesn’t look like Rust will be on this list for long. Rust seems to have a much brighter future.

  2. Hack

    Facebook created this programming language, a dialect of PHP, for the Hip-Hop Virtual Machine (HHVM). Using Hack, developers can build complex websites really fast; it runs without compiling.

    This is a statically typed language which also allows coders to use dynamic coding like in PHP. Despite an impressive début on the most popular social network, Hack hasn’t found as much adoption since.

  3. Ada

    Ada has many great features, such as the flexibility to scale up to meet needs, avoidance of namespace pollution, data abstraction, information hiding semantics, reusability, concurrency support, methodology neutrality, real-time support, and safety-critical support.

    But then why is it not popular? Some programmers have a slew of reasons that you can check out here.

  4. Haskell

    Haskell is a “purely functional” programming language that is lazy, statically typed, and has typed inference. Besides its simple and elegant syntax, Haskell’s speed may amaze and surprise you.

    Its adherents swear by its novelty, power, and fun factor. It is more popular than you think. For example, ABN AMRO uses it for investment banking and Bluespec, an ASIC and FPGA design software vendor, uses it to develop products. You can go here to read about Haskell in industry.

  5. Erlang

    The language, developed by Ericsson Computer Sciences Lab, will be well-known to all those who have ever come up with a problem of concurrency.

    Freely available as open source, Erlang allows multithreading and uses a virtual machine like Java but unlike the latter, it is meant for embedded systems and very robust servers.

    Some very interesting applications have been developed using Erlang including Facebook chat. Its weird syntax, according to some, keeps new users away.

    Like any programming language, Erlang is good for some tasks, while not so efficient for others. Read this post if you want to know more.

  6. Racket

    Racket is a multi-paradigm language based on the rudiments of Lisp/Scheme. One of its design goals is to serve as a platform for language creation, design, and implementation.

    The Racket guide is one of the clearest and most well-organized documentation available for any programming language today. Its grammar is simple; it is untyped, and has teaching-centric libraries and languages.

    I’m not exactly sure why Racket is not popular; could it be that more people than we think hate parentheses?

  7. IO

    It is a relatively new programming language. It has a prototype-based object model like the ones in Self and NewtonScript.

    Its best features are its simplicity and minimal syntax which can be learned quickly. Adherents say it is a great language for general purpose programming.

    Once again, perhaps its newness is stopping it from becoming more popular. Read more here.

  8. Groovy

    It is a relatively new programming language. It has a prototype-based object model like the ones in Self and NewtonScript.

    Its best features are its simplicity and minimal syntax which can be learned quickly. Adherents say it is a great language for general purpose programming.

    Once again, perhaps its newness is stopping it from becoming more popular. Read more here.

  9. Scratch

    For those who want to catch them young, this programming language from MIT Media Lab is designed for children between the ages 8 and 16. Scratch has no typical syntax.

    “Make it more tinkerable, more meaningful, and more social than other programming languages,” says the development team. It is free, it is visual, and it is great for games and animation.

  10. Dart

    At one time, Google’s Dart was all set to dethrone JavaScript as the language of choice for web development.

    Unfortunately, Dart got left behind by JS and the tech giant remodeled it along the lines of CoffeeScript (Dart-to-JavaScript compiler).

    Customer-facing web applications of AdSense and AdWords use Dart. Dart has users outside Google, such as Blossoms and Workiva. Despite its strong hold within Google, Dart will have to be sold to outside developers.

  11. Q

    Q programming was developed by Kx Systems, a data analytics vendor. It offers multiple approaches to solve a problem, making it versatile.

    It is the query language for kdb+, a disk based and in-memory, column-based database.

    As a functional programming language, it has issues with predictable performance, which could be due to laziness and a higher reliance on garbage collection.

  12. Clojure

    Clojure, designed for concurrency, is a variation of the Lisp programming language. It runs on the Java Virtual Machine; you also get Java interoperability for free, in a more “Lispy” flavor.

    Unlike other lists, it comes with extra additions, multi-methods, and many pre-built data structures like vectors, maps, etc.

    Clojure hasn’t faced as much criticism as some other variants of Lisps have. Read this Quora thread to see why people think it is awesome.

  13. Lua

    Despite its simplicity, Lua is considered a multi-paradigm language supporting imperative, functional, and object-oriented approaches. Lua code tends to be executed faster than other interpreted languages. Lua has so many uses!

    There are thousands of languages, their frameworks, applications etc. It's very difficult to make a list like this. I’m sure you want to put some other languages, such as REBOL, Squeak, OCaml, and Whitespace, here or replace some of these. Some like Chef and Omgrofl are plain bizarre.

But really, a programming language is just a tool to get your job done, what matters is you master the tool you know properly.

Then again, you never know when knowing a bit of these underrated languages could help you, do you?

Not everyone can be a programmer

Late last year and early this year, there was a huge campaign by code.org, which brought together the biggest names in the field of computer sciences, encouraging everyone to take the hour of code. Names like Gates and Zuckerberg dedicated some time to provide support to some instructional videos. You can check it out at Code.Org.

The content in the code.org courses are really simple and I can assure you that anyone willing to invest some time can learn how to code. The idea of introducing simple and popular things in the context of programming appeals to the masses and if you stick with the course for long enough, they slowly wane you off these gimmicks and you will find yourself coding.

But, is learning how to code and being a programmer the same thing?



There are quite a few StackOverflow answers on the subject. One of them says -

"Learning how to program is very different from actually being able to be a valuable programmer. Programming is very simple for the most part. Read spec, implement accordingly. Test. Repeat. Yes, everyone can be a programmer. Not everyone can be a valuable programmer. Especially certain tasks require much more thinking and experimentation than others. Such things are best left for people who actually enjoy doing it. An example could be implementing low-level constructs, counting clock cycles, bits, and bytes without any modern programming tools or anything. Not everyone can handle that."

Another answer on the cplusplus forum says -

"Nope - I think that you've got to have certain traits to be a professional programmer (or even want to become one?). The kind of person who likes to solve puzzles, who is interested in technology, can be focused, ...

But I do think that everyone is capable of writing simple programs and could, therefore, become a programmer in the looser sense."

This blog post by Robert Smith has another perspective to it -

"Quite simply, programming is not for everyone. It is not an absolutely fun and delightful task as it’s portrayed to be in videos like the aforementioned or movies like “The Social Network”. It is rarely an invigorating social activity. A lot of time, it’s sitting in front of a computer screen, looking at a colorful text document, and thinking, and thinking, and typing, getting angry, and wondering why the hell you’re living a life sitting down."

After seeing all these answers, I can liken this to the value of degrees. An engineering degree from a reputed institution puts a candidate above their compatriots who don't have it. Having this degree is no bearing on his/her technical aptitude. In fact, technicians with on hand experiences are better most engineering skills.

The reason for this value to an engineering degree is not because of the skills that it teaches; it's the attitude. The attitude of solving problems; the ability to think differently, systematically and concisely. 4 years of being around peers who have the aptitude to adopt this kind of thought; 4 years of studying about problem solvers and problem-solving techniques changes the way you think. Hence the added value.

Programming is the engineering derivative of computer sciences and the same applies here. Programming is for you, only if you have coding skills and the engineering mindset.

Learn to Code by Competitive Programming

How do I Learn to Code? This is probably the most nagging question at the back of your mind once you have decided that you want to learn how to program. Like learning anything else, there is no standard process for learning to code. Of course, there are guidelines, there are courses, there are ideologies, and there are set traditions, but there is no one correct way.

You can begin with is Competitive Programming. Getting started with it is quite easy and if you devote a sufficient amount of time and effort, you can develop a very strong grasp of programming logic in a relatively short amount of time.

Here are some steps to help you get started and be good at it.
  • Get comfortable writing code in one of these languages C, C++, or Java. Why only C, C++ or Java? Because these are the standard languages allowed in any programming competition.
  • If you are already good at C, you should learn C++. It is the most popular language among competitive programmers because of its speed and an excellent library in the form of STL (Standard Template Library).
  • Pick an online judge. Recommended ones are Topcoder and Codeforces. These sites have high-quality problems and allow you to see another’s code post contest completion. These also categorize problems based on the topic. Some other popular judges include SPOJ, CodeChef (powered by SPOJ), and HackerEarth.
  • Start with simple problems that typically require transforming English to code and does not require any knowledge of algorithms. Solving Div 2 250 (Division 2, 250 points) in Topcoder or Div 2 Problem A in Codeforces is a good start.
  • In the early stages of programming, people tend to write long pieces of code, which is actually not required. Try to keep the codes short and simple.
  • Practice these problems until you become comfortable that you can submit it for 240 odd points on any day.
Start implementing basic (or standard) algorithms. I suggest you read them from Topcoder tutorials or Introduction to algorithms.
  1. Graph algorithms: Breadth first search (BFS), Depth first search(DFS), Strongly connected components (SCC), Dijkstra, Floyd-Warshall, Minimum spanning tree(MST), and Topological sort
  2. Dynamic programming: Standard dynamic programming problems such as Rod Cutting, Knapsack, Matrix chain multiplication, etc
  3. Number theory: Modular arithmetic, Fermat’s theorem, Chinese remainder theorem(CRT), Euclidean method for GCD, Logarithmic Exponentiation, Sieve of Eratosthenes, and Euler's totient function
  4. Greedy: Standard problems such as Activity selection
  5. Search techniques: Binary search, Ternary search, and Meet in the middle
  6. Data structures (Basic): Stacks, Queues, Trees, and Heaps
  7. Data structures (Advanced): Trie, Segment trees, Fenwick tree or Binary indexed tree(BIT), and Disjoint data structures
  8. Strings: Knuth Morris Pratt (KMP), Z algorithm, Suffix arrays/Suffix trees (a bit advanced algorithms)
  9. Computational geometry: Graham-Scan for convex hull, and Line sweep
  10. Game theory: Basic principles of Nim game, Grundy numbers, and Sprague-Grundy theorem
The list is not complete, but these are the ones that you encounter very often in the contests. There are other algorithms, but those are required very rarely in the contests.

  • Once you have enough knowledge of popular algorithms, you can start solving the medium level problems. That is p 2 all problems in Topcoder and Codeforces. It is advisable not to go for p 1 500 at this point.
  • Learning to code is all about practicing. Participate regularly in the programming contests. Solve the ones that you cannot solve in the contest, after the contest. Apart from Topcoder and Codeforces you can also look at HackerEarth Challenges or Codechef contests.
  • Read the codes of highly rated programmers. Compare your solution with them. You can see that it is simple and shorter than your solution. Analyze how they have approached and improve your implementation skills.
  • Read the editorials after the contest. You can learn how to solve the problems that you were not able to solve in the contest and learn alternative ways to solve the problems which you could solve.
  • Always practice the problems that you could solve in the contest. If you are able to solve p 2 250 and 500 in the contest but not p 2 1000, then practice as many p 2 1000 problems as as you can.
  • Do not spend too much time if you are not getting the solution or are stuck somewhere.
  • After you feel that you have spent enough time, look at the editorials. Understand the algorithm and code it. Do not look at the real solution before you have attempted to write the code on your own.
  • Programming is a very practical and hands-on skill. You have to continuously do it to be good at it. It's not enough to solve the problem theoretically. You have to code it and get the solution accepted. Knowing which algorithm/logic to use and implementing it are two different things. It takes both to be good at programming.
  • The programming learning phase is going to take a lot of time and the key is practicing regularly. It will take some time before you can attempt p 1 500 and other tough problems. Do not give up on reading the editorials and implementing them even if it takes many hours/days. Remember that everything requires practice to master it.
It takes a considerable amount of time before you get good at it. You have to keep yourself motivated throughout. Forming a team and practicing is a good choice. Not giving up is the key here.

(Part 2) Essential Questions To Ask When Interviewing Developers In 2021

The first part of this blog stresses the importance of asking the right technical interview questions to assess a candidate’s coding skills. But that alone is not enough. If you want to hire the crème de la crème of the developer talent out there, you have to look for a well-rounded candidate.

Honest communication, empathy, and passion for their work are equally important as a candidate’s technical knowledge. Soft skills are like the cherry on top. They set the best of the candidates apart from the rest.

Re-examine how you are vetting your candidates. Identify the gaps in your interviews. Once you start addressing these gaps, you find developers who have the potential to be great. And those are exactly the kind of people that you want to work with!

What constitutes a good interview question?

An ideal interview should reveal a candidate’s personality along with their technical knowledge. To formulate a comprehensive list of questions, keep in mind three important characteristics.

  • Questions are open-ended – questions like, “What are some of the programming languages you’re comfortable with,” instead of “Do you know this particular programming language” makes the candidate feel like they’re in control. It is also a chance to let them reply to your question in their own words.
  • They address the behavioral aspects of a candidate – ensure you have a few questions on your list that allow a candidate to describe a situation. A situation where a client was unhappy or a time when the developer learned a new technology. Such questions help you assess if the candidate is a good fit for the team.
  • There is no right or wrong answer – it is important to have a structured interview process in place. But this does not mean you have a list of standard answers in mind that you’re looking for. How candidates approach your questions shows you whether they have the makings of a successful candidate. Focus on that rather than on the actual answer itself.

Designing a conversation around these buckets of interview questions brings you to my next question, “What should you look for in each candidate to spot the best ones?”

Hire GREAT developers by asking the right questions

Before we dive deep into the interview questions, we have to think about a few things that have changed. COVID-19 has rendered working from home the new normal for the foreseeable future. As a recruiter, the onus falls upon you to understand whether the developer is comfortable working remotely and has the relevant resources to achieve maximum productivity.

#1 How do you plan your day?

Remote work gives employees the option to be flexible. You don’t have to clock in 9 hours a day as long as you get everything done on time. A developer who hasn’t always been working remotely, but has a routine in place, understands the pitfalls of working from home. It is easy to get distracted and having a schedule to fall back on ensures good productivity.

#2 Do you have experience using tools for collaboration and remote work?

Working from home reduces human interaction heavily. There is no way to just go up to your teammate’s desk and clarify issues. Virtual communication is key to getting work done. Look for what kind of remote working tools your candidate is familiar with and if they know what collaborative tools to use for different tasks.

Value-based interview questions to ask

We went around and spoke to our engineering team, and the recruiting team to see what questions they abide by; what they think makes any candidate tick.

The result? – a motley group of questions that aim to reveal the candidate’s soft skills, in addition to typical technical interview questions and test tasks.

#3 Please describe three recent projects that you worked on. What were the most interesting and challenging parts?

This is an all-encompassing question in that it lets the candidate explain at length about their work ethic—thought process, handling QA, working with a team, and managing user feedback. This also lets you dig enough to assess whether the candidate is taking credit for someone else's work or not.

#1 Write an algorithm for the following

  1. Minimum Stack - Design a stack that provides 4 functions - push(item), pop, peek, and minimum, all in constant order time complexity. Then move on to coding the actual solution.
  2. Kth Largest Element in an array - This is a standard problem with multiple solutions of best time complexity orders where N log(K) is a common one and O(N) + K log(N) is a lesser-known order. Both solutions are acceptable, not directly comparable to each other, and better than N log(N), which is sorting an array and fetching the Kth element.
  3. Top View of a Binary Tree - Given a root node of the binary tree, return the set of all elements that will get wet if it rains on the tree. Nodes having any nodes directly above them will not get wet.
  4. Internal implementation of a hashtable like a map/dictionary - A candidate needs to specify how key-value pairs are stored, hashing is used and collisions are handled. A good developer not only knows how to use this concept but also how it works. If the developer also knows how the data structure scales when the number of records increases in the hashtable, that is a bonus.

Algorithms demonstrate a candidate’s ability to break down a complex problem into steps. Reasoning and pattern recognition capabilities are some more factors to look for when assessing a candidate. A good candidate can code his thought process of the algorithm finalized during the discussion.

#2 Formulate solutions for the below low-level design (LLD) questions

  • What is LLD? In your own words, specify the different aspects covered in LLD.
  • Design a movie ticket booking application like BookMyShow. Ensure that your database schema is tailored for a theatre with multiple screens and takes care of booking, seat availability, seat arrangement, and seat locking. Your solution does not have to extend to the payment option.
  • Design a basic social media application. Design database schema and APIs for a platform like Twitter with features for following a user, tweeting a post, seeing your tweet, and seeing a user's tweet.

Such questions do not have a right or wrong answer. They primarily serve to reveal a developer’s thought process and the way they approach a problem.

#3 Some high-level design (HLD) questions

  • What do you understand by HLD? Can you specify the difference between LLD and HLD?
  • Design a social media application. In addition to designing a platform like Twitter with features for following a user, tweeting a post, seeing your tweet, and seeing a user's tweet, design a timeline. After designing a timeline where you can see your followers’ tweets, scale it for a larger audience. If you still have time, try to scale it for a celebrity use case.
  • Design for a train ticket booking application like IRCTC. Incorporate auth, features to choose start and end stations, view available trains and available seats between two stations, save reservation of seats from start to end stations, and lock them till payment confirmation.
  • How will you design a basic relational database? The database should support tables, columns, basic field types like integer and text, foreign keys, and indexes. The way a developer approaches this question is important. A good developer designs a solution around storage and memory management.
Here’s a pro-tip for you. LLD questions can be answered by both beginners and experienced developers. Mostly, senior developers can be expected to answer HLD questions. Choose your interview questions set wisely, and ask questions relevant to your candidate’s experience.

#4 Have you ever worked with SQL? Write queries for a specific use case that requires multiple joins.

Example: Create a table with separate columns for student name, subject, and marks scored. Return student names and ranks of each student. The rank of a student depends on the total of marks in all subjects.
