Campus hiring at national scale, run on one assessment platform

The Big Code is a national coding challenge, powered by HackerEarth, built to find India's strongest young engineers before the rest of the market reaches them. Run over three weeks for first, second, and pre-final-year students from circuit branches across the country, it funneled tens of thousands of participants through progressively harder rounds, down to a top 50 who built AI prototypes in a 48-hour hackathon, and finally to a top 15 who presented their solutions live before a panel of senior engineers.

It's a template for what a modern campus program can be: a single challenge that builds brand affinity with the country's most ambitious CS talent, surfaces high-signal candidates years ahead of a traditional hiring cycle, and runs the entire funnel on infrastructure that scales without a hitch.

Early-career technical hiring in India is a scale problem disguised as a talent problem. The talent is abundant, hundreds of thousands of capable students across hundreds of institutions, but reaching them, ranking them credibly, and doing it before competitors do is where campus programs break down.

A challenge at this scale has to solve several things at once. It has to engage a national student audience and give them a reason to lean in, not just fill out another application form. It has to separate genuine algorithmic ability from resume polish, at a volume no interview panel could handle. It has to protect the integrity of that ranking when tens of thousands of remote participants are competing for prizes and prestige. And it has to identify, from an enormous top of funnel, the small number of students genuinely worth a final-round seat, without taking months to get there.

A conventional campus drive can't do this. The volume is too high for manual screening, the timeline too long, and the reach too narrow to touch the full national pool.

The Big Code ran on HackerEarth as a single, staged funnel, each round calibrated to a different level of ability and designed to narrow a national field down to its very best.

The program opened with registration and a qualifying round built on a hybrid of MCQs and coding tasks, evaluating core aptitude across every registered student and rewarding both speed and precision. The top 15,000 advanced into Round 1, a rigorous algorithmic challenge testing computer-science fundamentals. The field then narrowed to the top 1,500 for Round 2, an advanced coding assessment where complex problem-solving decided who reached the finale.

The top 50 finalists moved into a 48-hour AI-themed hackathon, building and submitting working prototypes against a live problem statement. The top 15 earned an invitation to present their solutions to a live judging panel.

Two things made this work at scale. First, every round ran on evaluation infrastructure that scored coding performance automatically and consistently, so 15,000 submissions were ranked on the same objective standard rather than on reviewer availability. Second, integrity was built into the funnel: tie-breaks were resolved on completion time and plagiarism percentage, so the ranking that decided who advanced held up to scrutiny at every stage.

The Big Code delivered a national stage and a credible shortlist from the same three-week program.

On engagement, the challenge reached first, second, and pre-final-year students from top institutions across India, the IITs, NITs, IIITs, DTU, and dozens more, and gave them a reason to compete rather than merely apply. Finalists emerged from institutions spread across the country, evidence that the program surfaced talent broadly, not just from the best-known names.

On signal, the staged funnel converted a national field into a ranked, defensible shortlist: from open registration, to 15,000 qualifiers, to 1,500 advanced coders, to 50 hackathon finalists, to 15 students who earned a live audience with senior engineers. Each cut was made on demonstrated coding ability, scored the same way for every participant.

And on efficiency, all of it happened in three weeks on infrastructure the hiring team could trust, with evaluation, scale, and integrity handled by HackerEarth, so their engineers could spend their time judging the finalists who mattered, not administering the rounds that got them there.
